Interviewed Karin Slaughter last Wednesday in the Odeon Theatre in Amsterdam. She is a woman of quiet determination. Very impressive. I did a short introduction (which you can read on
www.john-adams.nl) and she then talked for about 25 minutes, anwering all the questions I wanted to ask her during the interview afterwards. So that required some quick thinking on my part.
But we did alright. She is an effortless speaker, talking about her work, her background, her future plans and any other stuff I thought to ask. I was amazed at her level of planning. The way she thinks about the books she wants to write and how she goes about getting it all done. Sitting there for the introduction of Faithless here in the Netherlands, she talked about her next book, about the one after that and the one after that. She has the next three lined up, and not only that, she can actually say something about them.
That's what I mean, quiet determination.
And she knows her stuff. Questions can just as easily lead to an anecdote or to some scientific report from which she manages to quote any information she needs, statistics or insights.
It is funny, she is famous for her specific combination of down home life in the small Georgia town she invented and the very graphic violence she writes. The violence I don't find very convincing at all. I read it and think "sure", but somehow it doesn't touch me. I think her strength is in the claustrophobic small town life and the oppressive atmosphere that surrounds it. People watching each other, always commenting on what other do and all that sort of thing. That is scary.
